The Haydon HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A is a boxed, selectable DC power supply providing one main power output. It can be configured to supply up to 8A in 12V mode or up to 4A in 24V mode, making it suitable for compatible professional security and low-voltage equipment whose voltage and current requirements fall within the manufacturer’s specifications.

This model includes standby-battery charging, mains and fault indicators, additional monitoring relay outputs, electrical protection and front-and-rear enclosure tamper monitoring. It should not be confused with the separate HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A-8W, which includes an eight-way output distribution board.

Key Features

  • Selectable 12V DC or 24V DC operation
  • Maximum 8A output in 12V mode
  • Maximum 4A output in 24V mode
  • One main DC power output
  • Supports up to two 12V 7Ah standby batteries
  • Maximum 0.7A battery-charging current
  • Mains and independent relay outputs
  • Mains and fault status indicators
  • Front and rear tamper monitoring

These features are specified in Haydon’s official product datasheet.

Selectable 12V or 24V Operation

The power supply operates in one selected voltage mode at a time. It does not provide separate 12V and 24V outputs simultaneously.

12V Mode

When configured for 12V operation, the mains-powered output is:

  • 13.2–14.0V DC
  • 13.8V DC nominal
  • 8A maximum

When running from standby batteries in 12V mode, the stated output range is 10.5–12.4V DC. Connected equipment must be compatible with the full manufacturer-stated voltage range, not only a nominal 12V supply.

24V Mode

When configured for 24V operation, the mains-powered output is:

  • 27.0–28.0V DC
  • 27.6V DC nominal
  • 4A maximum

When running from standby batteries in 24V mode, the stated output range is 21.0–24.7V DC.

Important Fuse Requirement

The PSU is supplied with an 8A output fuse installed for 12V operation. Haydon instructs that this fuse must be changed to the supplied 4A fuse when the unit is configured for 24V operation.

The operating voltage, output fuse and connected equipment must all match. Voltage selection and mains installation should be completed by a suitably qualified security or electrical installer.

Genuine Single-Output Design

The HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A provides one main DC power output. The 8A or 4A rating applies to that single output according to the selected voltage mode.

It does not include:

  • Eight individually fused equipment outputs
  • An eight-way fire-relay fuse board
  • Independently switchable device outputs
  • Separate simultaneous 12V and 24V outputs

Installers requiring eight distributed and individually configurable outputs should consider the different HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A-8W model. Haydon lists the single-output and eight-output versions as separate products.

Standby-Battery Support

The enclosure can accommodate up to two 12V 7Ah standby batteries. The PSU provides a maximum battery-charging current of 0.7A and uses a 0.5A PTC charger-protection device. Batteries are not included unless your own product variation explicitly states otherwise.

The required battery connection depends on the selected voltage mode and must follow Haydon’s installation instructions. Do not assume that the batteries are connected in the same arrangement for both 12V and 24V operation.

Actual standby time depends on factors including:

  • Selected operating voltage
  • Connected equipment load
  • Battery capacity and condition
  • Cable losses
  • Ambient temperature
  • Battery age
  • Required system operation during a mains failure

A fixed backup duration should not be advertised without completing an appropriate system-load and battery calculation.

Monitoring Outputs and Indicators

The PSU provides additional mains and independent relay outputs, together with panel indicators for mains and fault status. These can support integration with suitable monitoring equipment when correctly wired and configured.

The manufacturer’s datasheet does not describe this single-output model as having an eight-way fire-interface board. It should therefore not be advertised as providing eight relay-switchable outputs or as a complete fire-alarm interface.

Front and Rear Tamper Monitoring

The metal enclosure includes front and rear tamper monitoring. When connected to a compatible monitoring input, this can report the enclosure being opened or removed from its mounting surface.

Tamper monitoring provides an electrical status signal. It does not physically prevent access to the enclosure.

Electrical Protection

Haydon specifies protection against:

  • Over-current
  • Overload
  • Battery over-charge
  • Battery over-discharge

The unit uses an F3A mains fuse, an F8A output fuse in 12V mode, an F4A output fuse in 24V mode and a 0.5A PTC charger-protection device. Replacement protection components must match the manufacturer’s required type and rating.

Is this a 12V or 24V power supply?

It is switchable between 12V and 24V operation. It provides up to 8A in 12V mode or up to 4A in 24V mode. Only one voltage mode is used at a time.

How many main power outputs does it have?

It has one main DC output. It does not include the eight-way distribution board fitted to the separate -8W model.

Does it supply 8A at 24V?

No. Its maximum output is 8A in 12V mode or 4A in 24V mode.

Does it provide 12V and 24V simultaneously?

No. The installer selects either 12V mode or 24V mode.

Does the output fuse need changing for 24V operation?

Yes. Haydon states that the default 8A output fuse must be changed to the supplied 4A fuse when the unit is set to 24V.

Are backup batteries included?

No batteries are listed as included. The enclosure can accommodate up to two 12V 7Ah batteries.

Does this model have eight switchable outputs?

No. This is the single-output model. The separate HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A-8W version provides the eight-way output board.

Is it an EN54-certified fire-alarm power supply?

The reviewed manufacturer documentation describes it as a selectable power supply. It should not be advertised as EN54-certified unless separate certification for this exact MPN is available.
