The Haydon HAY-PSU12/24V8/4A-8W is a boxed, selectable power supply designed for professional security and low-voltage installations requiring either 12V DC or 24V DC operation.

It delivers up to 8A total in 12V mode or 4A total in 24V mode and includes an eight-way fused distribution board. Each output can be configured individually as switched or unswitched, while the relay can be activated using normally open, normally closed, positive-voltage or negative-voltage triggering.

The metal enclosure provides front and rear tamper monitoring and space for up to two 12V 7Ah standby batteries. Batteries and connected security equipment are not included.

Selectable 12V or 24V Operation

The PSU can be configured for one of two operating modes:

12V Mode

In 12V mode, the mains-powered output operates between 13.2V and 14.0V DC, with a nominal output of 13.8V DC and a maximum total current capacity of 8A.

The battery-powered output range in 12V mode is stated as 10.5V to 12.4V DC.

24V Mode

In 24V mode, the mains-powered output operates between 27.0V and 28.0V DC, with a nominal output of 27.6V DC and a maximum total current capacity of 4A.

The battery-powered output range in 24V mode is stated as 21.0V to 24.7V DC.

The PSU is not designed to provide 12V and 24V outputs simultaneously. The required operating voltage must be selected during installation.

Correct Output Fuse Configuration

The PSU is supplied with an 8A output fuse installed for 12V operation.

When the unit is changed to 24V operation, the manufacturer instructs the installer to replace the default 8A output fuse with the supplied 4A fuse. The voltage setting and fuse rating must always match the intended operating mode.

Incorrect voltage selection or fuse installation could damage connected equipment or compromise system operation. Installation should therefore be completed by a suitably qualified security or electrical professional.

Eight Independently Configurable Outputs

The integrated fuse board provides eight separate power outputs.

Each output has an individual configuration jumper, allowing the installer to set it as either:

  • Switched: controlled through the relay
  • Unswitched: continuously powered while PSU power is available

This allows some connected devices to maintain power while selected outputs respond to the relay trigger.

Haydon specifies the outputs as eight 1A outputs in 12V mode. The connected system must also remain within the PSU’s overall 8A output limit. The datasheet does not give the same individual 1A wording for 24V mode, so that claim should not be extended to 24V operation without additional confirmation from Haydon.

Important Current-Rating Explanation

The power ratings are shared across the entire connected load:

  • 8A maximum total in 12V mode
  • 4A maximum total in 24V mode

This product does not provide 8A from each of its eight outputs.

The total current drawn by all connected devices, including any allowance required for battery charging and system operation, must remain within the selected mode’s permitted capacity.

Relay and Trigger Options

The fuse-board relay can be activated using:

  • Normally open contact
  • Normally closed contact
  • Positive voltage trigger
  • Negative voltage trigger

Positive and negative voltage triggers accept a signal between 5V and 24V DC.

When the relay changes state, each output responds according to its individual switched or unswitched jumper setting. This allows the installer to determine which connected devices retain power and which have their power removed when the relay is activated.

When using negative-trigger mode, Haydon’s connection diagram states that the trigger source must use a separate power supply.

Fire-Interface Application Notice

The relay-controlled fuse board may be integrated into a properly designed access-control release arrangement or other compatible security application.

However, the PSU is not a complete fire-alarm panel, fire-alarm interface system or emergency-release solution by itself. Any connection involving doors, locks, life-safety equipment or a fire-alarm system must be designed, installed and commissioned by qualified professionals.

The required fail-safe or fail-secure behaviour depends on the lock type, risk assessment, building requirements and overall system design.

Standby-Battery Capacity

The enclosure can accommodate up to two 12V 7Ah standby batteries. The PSU provides a maximum charging current of 0.7A and incorporates battery over-charge and over-discharge protection.

Standby batteries are not included.

The exact battery arrangement will depend on whether the PSU is configured for 12V or 24V operation. Battery installation and wiring must follow Haydon’s instructions and be completed by a qualified installer.

Actual backup duration depends on:

  • Total connected current load
  • Number and type of powered devices
  • Selected system voltage
  • Battery age and condition
  • Ambient temperature
  • Cable losses
  • Relay state
  • Required system operation during mains failure

No fixed standby duration should be promised without completing a proper system load and battery calculation.

Mains, Fault and Relay Monitoring

The enclosure includes panel indicators for:

  • Mains status
  • Fault status

The PSU also provides mains and independent relay outputs that can be integrated with suitable monitoring equipment.

The precise monitoring behaviour and required cabling should be verified during system design.

Front and Rear Tamper Monitoring

The metal enclosure includes tamper protection for both the front cover and rear mounting surface.

When connected to a compatible alarm or monitoring input, the tamper switches can report an attempt to open the enclosure or remove it from the mounting surface.

Tamper monitoring provides an electrical status signal; it does not physically prevent access to the enclosure.

Electrical Protection

Haydon lists protection against:

  • Over-current
  • Overload
  • Battery over-charge
  • Battery over-discharge

The PSU uses a 3A mains fuse. The main DC output uses an 8A fuse in 12V mode or a 4A fuse in 24V mode, while the charging circuit uses a 0.5A resettable PTC protection device.

Replacement components must match the manufacturer’s specified type and rating.

Is this PSU suitable for both 12V and 24V equipment?

Yes, but it operates in one selected voltage mode at a time. It provides up to 8A total at 12V or up to 4A total at 24V. It does not provide both voltages simultaneously.

How many outputs does it provide?

The integrated fuse board provides eight outputs. Each output can be individually configured as relay-switched or continuously powered.

Does each output provide 8A?

No. The 8A rating is the maximum combined output of the PSU in 12V mode. Haydon specifies eight 1A outputs in 12V mode.

Does it provide 8A at 24V?

No. The maximum output in 24V mode is 4A. The supplied output fuse must also be changed from 8A to 4A when the PSU is configured for 24V operation.

What does “8W” mean in the model number?
